Photos from the Great Atenas Wed-In
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to photograph you at the Great Atenas Wed-In. It was truly an amazing event, one in which I photographed seventy four couples as they remarried in peaceful protest against discriminatory practices by the mandated public health system. Although it was purely a functional event, many of the couples saw this as an opportunity to renew vows, and I saw happy faces, vintage veils, a flower-girl played by a dog and a lot of friends. I watched as couples with kids and grandkids quickly wiped away tears spawn by the sweetness of repeating old vows. But the sweetest thing of all was when these couples pried off burnished rings -- rings that after decades have become a part of their hands -- buffed them to a little shine, and gave them back to their spouse to be exchanged again.
Each of the 74 couples has an individual gallery -- links are listed to the right -- the password is felicidades. This was a monumental task to keep these organized and to edit them all in a timely manner, and I thank you all for your patience. Ordering instructions are at the end of each gallery. (And, a sincere apology if I somehow muddled up numbers and names. Couples one through ten, especially, came up so fast I'm not sure I got them all right. Please correct me where I have made any mistakes.) xoxo Melissa
